Born in Brussels in 1946, Philippe De Gobert has, since the late 1970s, been producing a distinctive body of work at the crossroads of
sculpture, architecture and photography. His method, which has remained consistent for over forty years, draws as much on
craftsmanship as on illusion: he builds his own models of buildings and interiors, which he then lights and photographs before printing
them in large format. This process gives rise to images that lie somewhere between a real place and a memory, between architecture
and a dream.
For his first exhibition at the gallery, Philippe De Gobert presents ‘Dedans / Dehors, in which he continues his exploration of the
interplay between the interior and exterior of a building, between what the walls conceal and what the light reveals, through the poetic
and subdued vision of Brussels architecture that has always characterised his work.
The exhibition brings together fourteen large-format photographs, accompanied by a scale model offering a unique insight into the
artist’s distinctive creative process.
For this series, De Gobert turns his gaze towards Brussels. The images function as a succession of windows opening onto the city:
they reveal what usually remains hidden and what is rarely, if ever, shown. It is neither the monumental façades nor the iconic views
that take centre stage, but rather the other side of the urban landscape: rear façades, inner courtyards and spaces hidden from public
view. Together, these photographs form a striking portrait of Brussels – at once sociological, architectural and poetic.
The models created by the artist form the starting point for his photographic practice. Philippe De Gobert first creates a model of a
fictional space or a location inspired by a real environment. These are often artists’ studios or iconic buildings. He favours minimalist,
uncluttered interiors bathed in light. The model is then set up in his studio, where it is lit like a film set. With the precision of an
architectural photographer, he takes photographs which he subsequently prints in large format.
With *Dedans / Dehors*, Philippe De Gobert reveals not only a little-known side of Brussels, but also photography’s ability to blur
the boundaries between reality and construction. His work straddles the line between documentary and fiction, between observation
and imagination, and invites visitors to rediscover the city through a fresh perspective.
